How Chuck Schumer might have (barf) played this right.

What a week! (Bet I can say that every week.) If I had to rate the vibes of this week somewhere between “won the lottery” and “was victim of a ritual killing from a Batman villain,” we’re hovering somewhere in the vicinity of a light maiming from the Riddler.

Enough preamble! Time to talk stories!

STORY NUMBER ONE: WE’RE GOIN’ CRAZY AND HE’S DRIVIN.

As you already know, brilliant educated reader, Trump’s poll numbers are bad. Like, bad bad. In one of them he’s 39 / 59 unfavorable. That’s -20! He’s approching Nico Harrison territory and still plummeting! But I already talked bad polling in the last Thursday Catchup, which means we can forge ahead to see how people are reacting to the news America doesn’t like what’s happening! Time for the first ever OMGreg social media post embed!!!! bwa bwa bwa bwaaaaaaa (that’s an airhorn)

Schumer on the Democratic response to Trump's shakedown of Harvard: "We sent him a very strong letter just the other day asking eight very strong questions."

A couple things here about the Senator’s points, because I think he’s g—-

TANGENTIAL INTERRUPTION!!! Guys… Chuck Schumer is not poor. Why doesn’t he have glasses that fit? What is he doing here? Is it on purpose? He could buy the little rubber pads that go on the ear-touching part (very scientific) that create friction so your glasses don’t slip down. He has to know the technology exists, it’s basically like sticking a ball of wax on a piece of metal. And if they’re readers, why doesn’t he do what all rational older people do and put a chain on them so they can rest down near his tie-knot until he needs them. They even make those cool ones where the center is connected by magnets so you can just pull them apart and let them hang over your shoulders like headphones. What I’m saying is, the guy has chosen to make part of his look “grandpa who needs a second to see what all these buttons say on the remote.”

Look, we could hammer Chuck on that responding to existential threat with a strongly worded letter was literally a joke on The Good Place. Or that he’s still telling people he did the right thing by forcing the Democrats to support the CR instead of battling over a shutdown. But I think the most dangerous option here is that Chuck thinks he’s about to be proven right.

A core value of this blog is Object Permanence! Even in a fast endless news cycle, things that exist now often existed before and did things on the record! And just a few months ago, Chuck went on Chris Hayes’ show to explain his reasoning on the CR.1 And he reiterated that he believes when Trump’s polling drops to the mid-30s, the Republicans he’s known and worked with will come back to their senses and work with the Democrats on legislation and checks & balances. Now obviously, the GOP hasn’t cracked at all and they can’t afford any cracks for their “one big beautiful” budget bill. But there’s still room for Trump to fall — in most of these polls, about 20% of Republicans dislike most of his policy moves, and if you peel them off to get to just the MAGA core he’s somewhere around 36%. So the first part of Chuck’s plan is happening — the numbers are dropping into the 30s. I think that only emboldens him to push up his glasses, sit back with I dunno, a malted milk, and wait for the Republicans to come to him. Is that gonna happen? Impossible to know. If you want to try to game it out, look at who in the Senate is up in what year, if they think Trump will be in a third term then, and how they imagine breaking off from him will impact their chances.

It’s a real Catch-22. If Republicans stick with Trump through all of this, it increases the chances of a wave election in 26.2 But if Republicans do split off, we have to live in a universe where Chuck Schumer was right.
