As of Tuesday, Jan 27th 2026, we're still here.

500ish words from Greg Iwinski

Piece of Tape You Need To Have Seen: Tonight in Minneapolis — literally minutes before typing this — a man rushed and attacked Representative Ilhan Omar during a town hall. [This is where you watch it and come back, so the rest of this makes sense.]

So, Minneapolis is the craziest most violent political spot in America right now. And right in the middle of that, a member of Congress gives a town hall. And some guy [details to come I’m sure, Stephen Miller is busy finding 3 Cool Facts You Need To Know about him] gets up and rushes her, spraying something at a member of Congress.

It seems like, as with many of these guys, his load-velocity was lower than expected and it didn’t actually hit the target. And, totally understandably, Omar flinches when he rushes her.

… but then she rushes him with a look you usually get from someone about to beat your ass. That is “not today” energy! Incredibly brave to go at someone who for all you know just tried to kill you, and really impressive to take 10 minutes and come back and finish the town hall.

And before it gets ruined by the social media political industry, I want to be one of the first through to door to say it’s a metaphor for democracy-loving Americans vs fascists. They can come at us, it’s scary and bad, but my man you better run. A five foot woman in her 40s was ready to throw down! Right after he was tackled she said “I’m built like that!”

In any situation, with any political or social labels, it is gold-star hilarious to try to attack a woman half your size and have them standing over you yelling “I’m built like that.” You have to retire from villainy, bro. You are cooked on global TV. Maybe there’s a henchmen retirement home where you can cheat at Monopoly against a bank robber who said he had a gun but everyone knew it was his phone in a bag.

But our Main Story Tonight is this: The Overton Window is moving.

What’s an Overton Window? I don’t want to go look it up, but it’s basically the bounds of acceptable opinion. MAGA has been innnnncredible at moving it to include heinous things like: vaccines are bad, interracial marriage is bad, Jewish people are bad, voting is bad, Epstein is really misunderstood and part of a deep state frame job because who didn’t go to his island???

When the window moves, what it looks like is a new phrase or idea becomes part of the conversation. And what it feels like is “oh wow everyone who said this was impossible is now talking about it as if it might be a real thing.”

Bernie Sanders and Medicare For All is a great example. Saying that Palestinians shouldn’t be bombed went from cancel-able to “celebrities are saying it.” Here in New York, three was even a city-altering shift in the idea that you could put garbage in cans.

And the Overton Window is moving on a few things in the midst of this Trump disaster term.

  • Abolish ICE. I think we’ve already talked about how in 2020 lots of pearl-clutching centrists acted like this was political cyanide… and now a majority of Americans support abolishing ICE.

  • Doing Medicare For All. Like, now. The healthcare fight last year plus the lack of ANY Republican plan other than “what if we gave you money to buy insurance in a market that’s now inflated because they all know you have money?”

  • Hounding your reps until they actually do what you want. The number of absolutely regular, mild-mannered suburban moms I have seen that have now MEMORIZED the numbers for their reps offices (in DC and at home) is insane. The staff-written tossed-off statement is not working. Rep Omar’s event notwithstanding, town halls are a verbal battlefield, and people under 45 are deciding it might be time to challenge there dust-ancient incumbent.

Quick Hit Here: You’ve seen this train of argument that protesters make ICE scared for their lives, that they killed Alex Pretti becuase it was a split second decision. This is a moment where the answer to the argument is not responding but stepping back into reality. Yeah bro, you signed up not for the military, not for your local PD, not even to work as personal security for a loud-mouthed rapper who keeps starting social media beefs and loves outdoor concerts! You signed up to be in ICE! And you were entrusted with a GUN! So sorry, you Celsius-chugging stepdad, you might have a higher bar to clear than everyone else does.

Second Quick Hit Here: I know it’s so tempting to point out MAGA is hypocritical about Alex Pretti because they all did Jan 6th… but to believe hypocrisy exists (as a sin OR as a thing people will apologize about) in 2026 really makes a fool of you, not them. It’s gone, baby! Just like pistol duels at noon or paying dowrys! You still believe these guys have beliefs and principles and worldviews? Don’t be this:
